What was College and Claremont like before Genray Hair Salon?
On the Corner of College and Claremont in Oakland, Ca is where three businesses currently exist. Starting with Noodle Theory, thenGenray Hair Salon, and the Claremont Rug Company. These shops have coexisted for about five years with no change. However prior to that, the corner was a whole lot different. Noodle Theory was Double Rainbow Ice Cream Parlor, The right side of the current Genray Salon was DBA Brown Records, then there was Flip A Hair Salon, then lastly Claremont Rug Company.

It's been four months, so hard to believe, since Genray has passed. I would love to say that people are right about that old saying, time makes things easier, but honestly I think it's a bunch of crap (with love I say that). However, what does happen, is you are able to start to embrace a new normal, one without Genray's physical self. It's not any easier, but makes you life more manageable on the richter scale of crazy. I certainly won't bore anybody with the the events I have managed in the last four months, but I can confidently say I make stressful look damn good. What I can give you is the beginning of a much needed process for me and that involves a remodel of the Oakland Salon.
Beginning on November 1, 2013 I will be embarking upon a four month remodel of Genray's Oakland salon. For me this is a gift to my staff and customers, to honor and move forward with our lives that Genray will always be a part of. I will be sharing the creative process, planning, constructions, before and afters, video interviews with the designers, and of course all the funny mishaps that will probably be my fault. There will also be really awesome details in the remodel honoring my sweet Genray. I had the one color process, hair cut and karatase treatment. I called the night before, was told that the next day they didn't really have the space for the hair cut. I was going out of town and I have long hair, so Itold them that I really only wanted a trim. So they put me in. The woman I saw also had lovely long hair, so I felt assured that no extra cutting was going to be going on! The color was matched, the treatment done (she told me the reason she was at this salon was because she loves the keratase products and not too salons have it.) I equated to let my hair air dry. The treatment left my hair soft and shiny (she said it lasts 4-8 shampoos) and my hair does not smell like I just had it just been colored. Dispite the disclaimer that the tribute doesn't cover tax or tip, when I went to go, they just told me that everything was taken care of, I didn't need to pay anything. Whether that was because of my short trim, rather than a full out hair cut, I don't know (And I left a $20 tip anyway, because, Wow! I want to go back!) the last time I had my hair colored they I was charged $120, (add the tip and it was $140). And while good, my hair still smelled like it had "had something done to it." This was a deal no matter how you looked at it. I really don't want to tell everbody about it, but hey, ya can't help braggin', either!
I had to wait 40 minutes as the woman who was coloring and cutting my hair was running behind schedule. I was also not happy with my hair cut as I was very clear that I wanted to keep the length but walked out with more than two inches off my hair.
